If you stay in the hospital at Klickitat Valley Health, your main inpatient provider may be a hospitalist. A hospitalist is a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner who focuses on caring for patients while they are in the hospital.
Hospitalists do not usually see patients for regular clinic visits. Their work is in the hospital, where they can respond quickly and help guide your care day to day.
How Hospitalists Support Your Care at KVH
Hospitalists check on you, review your symptoms, and order tests when needed. They watch for changes, adjust your treatment plan, and help manage pain and other concerns.
They also work closely with your nurses, therapists, and the rest of your care team. They coordinate with specialists when a specialist is needed and provide updates to your primary care provider when appropriate. With a hospitalist, your care stays connected.
What to Expect From Your Hospitalist
Hospitalists keep a close eye on you. They check on you at least once each day, and sometimes more often. They follow your test results, adjust your treatment as needed, and bring in therapy or rehab services when it will help your recovery.
Your hospitalist works closely with the care team in the hospital. They coordinate with specialists when you need extra expertise. They also share updates with your primary care and specialty providers outside the hospital, so your care stays connected.
Hospitalists are here to answer questions from you and the people you trust. We know support matters. Tell your nurse who you want involved in updates, like a family member, friend, or caregiver. We will follow your privacy choices while helping you and your support people understand the diagnosis, treatment options, and what to expect next.
Hospitalists also help your primary care provider stay available in the clinic. While you are in the hospital, the hospitalist focuses on your inpatient care. That helps your primary care provider focus on seeing patients in the office and supporting health needs across Klickitat County.
Staying Connected With Your Primary Care Provider
During your hospital stay, the hospitalist leads your inpatient care. Your primary care provider may not be able to visit you in the hospital.
Before you go home, your hospitalist will help create a discharge plan. This includes follow-up needs, prescriptions, and what to watch for after you leave. Your hospital records are shared with your primary care provider to support ongoing care.
If you do not have a regular primary care provider, we can help you find one for follow-up care after your hospital stay. This helps you stay supported once you are home after a hospital stay at KVH.
Care Questions or Updates
If you have questions during a hospital stay, start with the patient’s nurse. The nurse can answer many questions and can reach the hospitalist when needed.
If you are a loved one calling from outside the hospital, call KVH and ask for the hospital’s nurse station. Have the patient’s full name and date of birth ready.
We can share updates only if the patient has given permission, or if the law allows. Read more about KVH privacy practices here.
