Medical and Post-surgical Care at KVH
If you need to stay overnight in the hospital, our Medical/Surgical Unit is here for you. “Med/Surg” is for patients who need hospital care and close observation, but who are stable enough not to need intensive care.
Intensive care, also called ICU care, is for patients who need life-support level treatment, one-to-one nursing care, or other advanced-level care.
Who Provides Care
During your stay at KVH, a hospitalist leads your inpatient medical care. KVH hospitalists are physicians, physician assistants, or nurse practitioners who focus on caring for patients in the hospital.
Your hospitalist works with your nurses, therapists, and other staff each day. When appropriate, they coordinate with your primary care provider or specialist so your care stays connected. They will check on you, explain what is happening, and answer questions in plain language.
Care Provided in Med/Surg
Patients admitted to Med/Surg are treated for a wide range of conditions, including pneumonia and other respiratory infections, COPD flare-ups, heart failure, dehydration, sepsis, and recovery after orthopedic, general, or abdominal surgery. We also help with pain, breathing, and the smaller things that make a big difference when you’re not feeling well.
Care on Med/Surg can include IV fluids, IV antibiotics, breathing treatments, oxygen, pain control, therapy services, and heart monitoring when ordered.
Most patients can receive the care they need at KVH while on Med/Surg. Because KVH is committed to providing the safest care possible for patients, sometimes a condition requires specialized treatment that is not available at KVH. In that case, we may recommend a transfer to another hospital so you can receive the right level of care.
What to Expect if a Transfer Is Needed
Your care team will explain why a transfer is recommended and where you may be sent. We will help arrange transportation by ambulance when needed, and we will share your medical records with the receiving hospital so your care continues without delay.
Your family will be included in planning when the patient allows. We will answer questions as clearly as we can. We will talk with you about the plan each day and adjust it based on how you are doing.
What to Expect During Your Stay
You will be evaluated by a hospitalist and supported by your nursing team. Depending on your needs, you may also receive therapy services such as physical, occupational, respiratory, or speech therapy.
A case manager may meet with you to plan for a safe discharge. This may include follow-up appointments, home health care, equipment, transportation support, and other services you may need after you leave.
We know a hospital stay can feel stressful. Throughout your time with us, we will do our best to help you feel safe, informed, and supported with compassionate, personalized care.
Partnering With Family and Caregivers
Loved ones can be an important part of healing. Tell your nurse who you want involved in updates and care discussions. If you want one main contact for updates, we can help set that up.
Arriving and Visiting
When you arrive, our team will help you get where you need to go.
Please use the main hospital entrance and check in at registration before visiting a patient. Visiting hours are 8:00am to 8:00pm.
For the security of patients and staff, the hospital entrance is locked at 11:00pm. After-hours visitors must ring the doorbell for staff-controlled entry.
For full details about visiting, including updates and exceptions, go to Visitor Information.
Care Questions or Updates
If you have questions during a hospital stay, start with the patient’s nurse. The nurse can answer many questions and can reach the hospitalist when needed.
If you are a loved one calling from outside the hospital, call (509) 773-4022 and ask for the nurse station in Med/Surg. Have the patient’s full name and date of birth ready. We will gladly provide updates if the patient has given us permission, or if the law requires it.

Interpreter and Accessibility Support
Interpreter services and communication support are available at no cost. Tell a staff member right away if you prefer to communicate in a language other than English or if you need help due to a disability.
Read our Notice of Non-Discrimination and communication assistance options here.
For mobility support or wheelchair assistance for visitors, please call (509) 773-4022 and ask to speak with a Patient Access Specialist before you arrive.
Patient Safety
At KVH, advocating for yourself or a loved one is encouraged and welcome. You are an important part of the care team.
Ask questions if you do not understand the plan, a medicine, a test, or what happens next. Tell us if there is new pain, trouble breathing, dizziness, or any change that worries you. If something is bothering you, even if you are not sure it is a big deal, please tell us as soon as you can.
We take the care of our patients and guests seriously, and we will do our best to address concerns quickly and respectfully.
A Note About Infection Control
Hand hygiene is one of the best ways to prevent infection and support a healing environment. If you do not see hand cleaning before or after care, it is okay to speak up by saying, “Would you please wash or sanitize your hands?” This reminder is both welcome and encouraged. Keeping hands clean helps protect you, your loved ones, and other patients.
Recognizing Quality Care
Quality and patient safety guide our care every day, and we take recognizing staff who do outstanding work seriously. If you received excellent care from a nurse, provider, or staff member while at KVH, we would be grateful to hear about it.
Email feedback@kvhealth.net. If you can, include the staff member’s name, department, and the date of your care so we can honor and celebrate the people who cared for you or your loved one.
If something about your care did not go as expected, or if you have a quality or safety concern to share, email quality@kvhealth.net.
