Swing Bed Care

Swing bed care is short-term care in the hospital for people who no longer need care for a serious illness or injury, but aren’t quite ready to be home. We help you heal, regain strength, and work toward your maximum level of function and maximum independence.

In swing bed care, you stay in a hospital room and receive nursing care from licensed nurses and rehabilitation therapy. Your plan is built around your goals, like walking safely, managing daily tasks, or finishing a course of IV medicine. IV means medicine given through a small tube in a vein.

Swing bed care is not long-term care. It is a temporary step to help you return home with confidence and support.

All the Benefits of a Hospital, With a Home-Like Approach

Swing bed care takes place inside our critical access hospital, so you have hospital services close by if your needs change. You can receive skilled care while staying close to home and close to family.

You’ll be encouraged to get dressed each day. When it is safe, you can eat meals out of bed. You can also spend time outside your room in places like our healing garden, family visiting room, or chapel. These small steps support healing and help you build independence.

Hospital services include:

  • Nursing care focused on safety
  • Provider coverage day and night
  • Lab services
  • Pharmacy services
  • Diagnostic imaging, such as X-ray or CT when needed
  • Physical, Occupational, Respiratory and Speech therapies
  • Registered Dietitian support

Who May Benefit From Swing Bed Care

Swing bed care may be right for you if you need extra support after an illness, injury, or surgery. It can also help if you need care that is hard to manage at home right now.

Common needs include:

  • Recovery after surgery or a serious illness
  • Weakness or balance problems after illness
  • Physical or occupational therapy for walking, strength, dressing, or bathing
  • Speech therapy for communication, thinking skills, and safe swallowing
  • Wound care that needs skilled support
  • Respiratory therapy and monitoring
  • IV antibiotics for infection

Your care team will review your medical needs and safety, then talk with you and your family about the best plan.

Language and Communication Support

Interpreter services and communication support are available at no cost. Tell a staff member right away if you prefer to communicate in a language other than English or if you need help due to a disability.

Please read our Notice of Non-Discrimination.

Costs and Insurance

Coverage depends on your medical needs and your insurance plan. For help with a cost estimate, call (509) 773-4022 and ask for patient financial services.

If cost is a concern, tell us. We can talk through options and connect you with financial assistance information.

Partnering With Family and Caregivers

Loved ones can be an important part of healing. Tell your nurse who you want involved in updates and care discussions. If you want one main contact for updates, we can help set that up.

Arriving and Visiting

Please use the main hospital entrance and check in at registration before visiting a patient. Visiting hours are 8:00am to 8:00pm.

For the security of patients and staff, the hospital entrance is locked at 11:00pm. After-hours visitors must ring the doorbell for staff-controlled entry.

For full details about visiting, including updates and exceptions, go to Visitor Information.

Care Questions or Updates

If you have questions during a hospital stay, start with the patient’s nurse. The nurse can answer many questions and can reach the hospitalist, a doctor who cares for patients in the hospital, when needed.

If you are a loved one calling from outside the hospital, call the transitional care team at (509) 773-1037. Have the patient’s full name and date of birth ready. We can share updates if the patient has given us permission.
