Derek Greenwood, DNP, PMHNP


Derek Greenwood, DNP, PMHNP has a Doctor of Nursing Practice student in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practice (DNP-PMHNP) from Washington State University and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (cum laude) from Fresno State University. He is a dedicated registered nurse and certified addiction counselor with over a decade of experience spanning emergency medicine, behavioral health, substance use treatment, and nursing education. He currently serves as a Staff RN Per Diem in the Emergency Department at Derek recently has taken a position at KVH, in Behavioral Health. Derek has experience in the Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) initiative and holds TNCC certification. A passionate advocate for integrated care and recovery, Derek previously served as the RN Case Manager and Peer Program Supervisor at One Community Health, where he helped launch and lead an innovative Integrated MAT/Peer Recovery Program. He also facilitated recovery support groups and promoted health education and behavioral health integration in both primary and specialty care settings. From 2023 to 2024, Derek worked as Adjunct Nursing Faculty at Columbia Gorge Community College, where he taught second-year clinicals and lectured on Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and mental health, demonstrating a deep commitment to the next generation of nurses.

His earlier nursing career includes service in high-acuity emergency departments at Kaiser Permanente San Jose, Natividad Medical Center, and the VA Fresno, where he gained hands- on experience in trauma, psychiatric emergencies, OB/GYN, and pediatrics. Derek also served as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor I (CADC I) at Serenity Lane Treatment Center, where he led individual and group therapy sessions for individuals in inpatient SUD recovery.

Derek’s healthcare career builds on a strong foundation in community service. As an undergraduate intern at the Monterey Bay Geriatric Resource Center, he co-developed a 30-hour geriatric health literacy workshop embedded in a UCSF-affiliated family practice residency. He also has hospice training experience and previously worked for over a decade as an able- bodied seaman with the U.S. Merchant Marine, supporting oceanographic institutions such as Scripps, MBARI, and Woods Hole. He is a registered Nurse, State of Washington, ANCC Board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor I (CADC I), Oregon Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) Certified Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS).
